Recommended TORAYA AOYAMA

Wood, mortar, and monotone shades; the materials in the minimalistic design behind this specialty shop reflects the choice ingredients of the store’s delectable Yokan, a bar of gelled sweet bean paste made chiefly of azuki beans, agar and sugar, usually sold in a block form, and eaten in slices.

Overview

The shop is a new take on the long-running renown shop Toraya that was founded in the early 16th century in Kyoto. Located in Aoyama, Tokyo, just a few blocks away from the venue sight of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the shop is open for a limited time only, with plans to close in 2021. We have incorporated mainly movable furniture to make for a flexible design that can accompany events as well.

Issues/Themes

As the general vicinity has many sports scenes to offer, we focused on a design that welcomes even patrons still in their sports attire to stop on by and—as the tagline reads—grab a “Yokan for your sport snack.”

Space Solution/Realization

Under the concept name of “Toraya’s Studio,” we aimed for a space in which people can relax, that offers a sporty and clean environment with delicious sweets that both recharge and sooth a tired body after strenuous activity. The simple and casual space of the store with its hints of the original and its history, will be like an icon as well, depicting the very times of which it straddles. We were successful in creating a new shop style for all ages to enjoy that brings Yokan, with the help of sports, a little bit closer.

The shop is comprised of a merchandise area and a self-serve café area. It holds a variety of events and get-togethers including yoga classes.

The movable row of tables is designed in traditional, simple and concise methods.
