About the 25th anniversary project
1. Logo creation
Together with creators who have a connection with our company, we will create and release the anniversary logo (scheduled for release in September).
2. Feature article: "Everyone's 'My 25'" (tentative title)
We will be producing a special feature in which creators and companies who have appeared on our magazine for a long time will contribute articles titled "My 25." The articles will be published one after another starting around September.
3. Online talk event "Creating, Using, Thinking About Design" (tentative title)
Starting with the launch of the magazine in October, we will hold three talk sessions to discuss the present and future of Japanese design, with the JDN tagline of "make," "use," and "think." Each session will have a different theme, and we will invite leading designers to give talks. We also plan to have a Q&A corner for readers in each session.
With gratitude for the past 25 years, we aim to provide you with hints and insights for looking into the future of Japanese design. The date, time, and speakers will be announced at a later date, and viewers will be invited to watch the program.
Details of each project will be announced on the design information site "JDN" as soon as they are decided.
History of the design information site "JDN"
October 1997 | "Japan Design Net" was launched as an in-house new business project at TANSEISHA Co., Ltd., Ltd. in the early days of internet business. The site mainly features digest articles from the "Kuwasawa Design School" organized by the Kuwasawa Design School Alumni Association, and occasionally adds content such as introductions to the designs of famous designers such as Shigeru Uchida, Shiro Kuramata, and Motomi Kawakami, a phone directory of design spots, and giveaways. |
---|---|
1998年 | Starting in the new year, the site will be updated every Wednesday and an email newsletter will also be published. Events, news, design contests, books and other content will be added in due course. We start the "Graduation Exhibition", a special feature on graduation works from design universities and vocational schools. |
1999年 | The magazine launched the "Kiriyama Toshiki's Designers of Interest" section, where design director Toshiki Kiriyama selects and introduces designers of the season every month. In addition, the magazine began publishing reports on the Milano Salone, an international furniture fair. Both of these have become popular corners that continue to this day. A new contest information section will be created and named "Toryumon." |
2002年 | Contest information has been separated into a separate site called "Toryumon," the Contest Information Site. |
2003年 | The job listings for designers that were posted on the site's bulletin board have been separated into a separate site called "Design Jobs." |
2012年 | To mark the 15th anniversary, the site name was changed to "JDN." The operator's trade name will also be changed to "JDN INC.", the same as the site. |
2015年 | The fifth website renewal. The tagline will be "A design information site for people who create, use, and think." |
2017年 | The Graduation Exhibition feature was separated into a separate website called "Graduation Exhibition" (later relaunched as "Design no Tobira" in 2021). |
2022年 | Celebrating the 25th anniversary of its publication, a special event will be held. Moving on to the next stage. |

Shingo Miyauchi (President and Chief Executive Ofcer JDN INC.)
Thanks to your support, JDN, which we operate, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this October. Since its launch as a new in-house business at Tanseisha in the early days of the Internet business in Japan, we have only been able to continue to this day thanks to your patronage, for which we are extremely grateful.
The concept of the word "design" in Japan has changed significantly over the past 25 years. It is no longer just about something that looks good; it now has a greater role in embodying the values and stories of customers and resolving business and social issues. "Makers," "users," and "thinkers" all have stories that are appropriate for the times. Going forward, "JDN" will continue to inspire such people and help open up new possibilities. We will continue to strive to provide high-quality information, so we appreciate your continued patronage.
Yasushi Yamazaki (Founding Member / Currently General Manager of JDN INC. Director)
In the summer of 1997, the project members got together and decided on the domain name "japandesign.ne.jp" and the media name "Japan Design Net" based on the theme of the new business, "to disseminate information on Japanese design." I remember having a discussion about what we could do to become a media outlet. We decided to just keep adding content. It's been 25 years since we decided on that and started running.
We were able to overcome the extremely difficult few years since the launch and the various situations that followed thanks to the support of many stakeholders, including our readers and advertisers. We are grateful to everyone and we are determined to continue to meet their expectations.
Please note that this may be subject to change without prior notice.
