【overview】
The facility was completely destroyed and the materials suffered catastrophic damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Approximately 460,000 damaged materials were rescued and restoration work was carried out with the support of over 70 specialized institutions and museums nationwide, with the aim of creating a museum that would restore materials damaged by the tsunami, an unprecedented project in the world. After the disaster, the museum aimed to create new value by presenting the treasures of the hometown to the world as "living exhibits."
[Design points]
1. In order to give the impression that the damaged materials had been given new life, we aimed to create a space that would convey the feeling of vitality by grouping the materials together in a dynamic group.
2. In order to unravel the culture of Rikuzentakata, we created a color called "Takata Nature" that is reminiscent of the surrounding environment, such as the sea and mountains.
3. The facility will be a base for passing on the culture of the hometown that survived the earthquake disaster to the next generation, and will feature Video Production and experiential exhibits that children can experience.
[Evaluation by the judges]
Cultural properties and exhibit materials damaged in the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake have been rescued and restored, and are now being displayed in a new configuration in two combined museums. The museum offers new experiences that bring the materials to life, such as dynamic displays that show the items as a group and specimen boxes that visitors can handle. The careful rescue of previously treasured items and the display of a stuffed beaked whale, each half of which is presented differently, remind visitors that we live on the history of the region, and that new layers are added every day to shape the region.
