We will implement carbon offsetting for office renovations to achieve point 0 and carbon neutrality.

  • News Release

Tanseisha has produced its first line of environmentally friendly original furniture, a "side table" and a "coat hanger," made entirely from FSC®-certified wood (*1). These two products were designed and delivered to match the concept of the "Carbon Offset Room" (*2), which was newly established on June 7th in "point 0 marunouchi" (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), a co-working space aimed at realizing the "office space of the future."

Tanseisha is committed to reducing the environmental impact throughout its corporate activities, and in July 2022, its headquarters obtained the FSC®-CoC certification (FSC®-C179924) (※3), the most widely used forest certification system in the world, and has been promoting the use of properly managed forest products in the proposal and sale of wooden products. This initiative is part of that effort, and the original products, which were created using Tanseisha's ability to concretize and realize the concept of the space, were made using properly managed forest products, and were properly managed in the processing and distribution process, including manufacturing and storage until the final product was produced. This product is Tanseisha's first original furniture that meets FSC certification standards.

Going forward, Tanseisha will continue to work to contribute to solving issues toward the realization of a sustainable society through its business activities.

The side table and coat hanger we created are made from FSC® certified wood and are carefully assembled to embody the concept of the space, "the shape of something invisible."

Background and overview of the initiative

Tanseisha has set "preservation of the natural environment" as one of its materiality (important issues) in its CSR efforts, and is working to reduce the environmental impact throughout its entire business activities, including Environmental Consideration in creating spaces. Tanseisha is also involved in "point 0 marunouchi," where the company delivered its products this time, and the company implemented carbon offsetting (*5) of the CO2 (approximately 10 tons *4) emitted during the renovation of the newly constructed "Carbon Offset Room," in order to achieve carbon neutrality through the creation of the space when renovating an existing conference room. The room was designed and constructed by Tanseisha based on the concept of "the shape of something invisible," which aims to reduce CO2 emissions and create opportunities and spaces for communication by visualizing them. By installing furniture that complies with FSC® certification standards and was designed to match the concept of the space, the company contributed to creating a unified space that will raise the environmental awareness of the users of the room.

Comments from related parties

The purpose of this conference room renovation was not simply to reduce the environmental impact of the renovation, but also to achieve carbon neutrality through future space creation and to create an opportunity for point 0 participating companies and related companies, including business partners, to talk about realizing a sustainable society. By providing an environment where discussions can be held while showing actual concrete examples, such as using furniture made from FSC®-CoC certified materials in the conference room, we aim to use the space as a place where people can think about what they can do as their own issue. Point 0 will continue to take on various initiatives with the aim of balancing the environment and the well-being of employees.

This project is one of our pioneering efforts, aiming to solve sustainable issues by combining properly managed FSC®-certified timber with the design capabilities of Tanseisha. The original product delivered to point 0 is our first furniture production that meets FSC® certification standards, and we would like to continue to work with our customers and other stakeholders on various initiatives aimed at realizing a sustainable society.

*1 FSC® certification: A forest certification system that certifies "proper forest management" as defined by the Forest Stewardship Council®, an international non-profit organization that aims to spread responsible forest management around the world. There are two types of certification: "FM certification," which examines and certifies forest management based on 10 principles and 70 standards that balance the environment, society, and economy, and "CoC certification," which covers the processing and distribution process of forest products.
*2 Carbon offset room: A room in which the CO2 emissions (approximately 10 tons) were offset during the renovation of a conference room in point 0 Marunouchi, a members-only co-working space operated by point 0.
*3 FSC®-CoC certification: This certification is awarded to companies that are inspected based on standards and rules established by FSC® to prevent the mixing of unsuitable wood during processing and distribution.
*4 Approximately 10 tons of CO2 will be emitted during this renovation. The calculation scope takes into account emissions from the raw materials, manufacturing and transportation stages of products procured for the renovation, as well as emissions from the renovation work itself. This is equivalent to the amount of CO2 absorbed by approximately 700 cedar trees in one year (assuming that one cedar tree absorbs 14 kg of CO2 per tree per year). Emissions are calculated based on values provided by suppliers and our own calculations. For our own calculations, we used IDEA as our basic unit database.
*5 Carbon offsetting: The idea of first recognizing the amount of greenhouse gases such as CO2 that are unavoidable in daily life and economic activities, and then making efforts to reduce them as much as possible. For any unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions, offsetting them by investing in greenhouse gas reduction activities commensurate with the amount of emissions.
