The Ogatsu Inkstone Traditional Industry Hall, for which we helped create the space, won the Museum and Cultural Spaces Award at the KUKAN DESIGN AWARD 2020 (sponsored by the Japan Space Design Association and the Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association). In addition, the following projects were selected as BEST100 or finalists.
KUKAN DESIGN AWARD is the only and largest spatial award in Japan, which was established with the aim of expanding new possibilities in spatial design by discovering outstanding designs and talented designers and promoting them to the world.
This award is a great encouragement to all involved in creating the space, including our designers. We would also like to thank our clients for giving us this opportunity, and everyone who helped us along the way.
Going forward, we will continue to keep in mind the perspective of those who will use the space and work to create rich spaces that can contribute to our customers' businesses.

[Design intent]
This museum is dedicated to Ishinomaki City Ogatsu inkstones, a nationally designated traditional craft. The facility, which was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, has been revived as a work of beauty that combines the weightiness of Ogatsu stone, which will never change, with the lightness of calligraphy culture. In addition, numerous inkstones and Video calligraphy are displayed throughout the exhibition space, elevating the space to the top in pursuit of the continuity of beauty woven together by craft and culture. The cry of the stones mined locally resonates throughout the space, creating a museum that speaks from the unchanging earth.

The old facility was damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The building and exhibits were washed away by the tsunami. However, the beautiful craft culture and calligraphy culture remain in this area. We hope that visitors will experience the charm of these two cultures in the exhibition space. We hope that this honorable award will encourage as many people as possible to visit the facility, and that it will become one of the new bases for reconstruction. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those involved. (Design: Hashimoto Shunpei)
