Tokiwa-so is a legendary wooden apartment building where great manga artists, including Osamu Tezuka, gathered and spent their youthful days. It was demolished in 1982 due to deterioration, but due to the strong desire of many people, including local residents, it was revived as a manga museum.
Since no blueprints for the building remain, we proceeded with the design based on Research & Analysis, but there were many issues that had to be overcome as a modern public building. Despite that, we were particular about recreating the atmosphere and feeling that recalls the thoughts and stories of the manga artists of the time, such as giving the building a wooden texture and deliberately making the stairs creak, in contrast to the steel-framed building required by law. At the same time, we reevaluated the historical significance and cultural value of Tokiwa-so, including the special exhibition room and the multi-purpose manga lounge, and also equipped it with various functional rooms that serve as an information dissemination center to convey the passion and energy of the past to people today, and as a base for activities to revitalize the local area. The new building is not just a tribute to the past, but a future-oriented facility that is new yet nostalgic, old-fashioned yet brilliant.
Although the museum opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope that it will become even more popular as a facility that aims to preserve and develop local culture centered around manga and anime. (Total Direcion: Tsuyoshi Kato)
