The Kobe Sannomiya Hankyu Building, in which we helped create the space, won the Bronze Award for Public Living and Communication Spaces at the KUKAN DESIGN AWARD 2022 (sponsored by the Japan Space Design Association and the Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association). In addition, the following cases were selected for the Shortlist and Longlist.
KUKAN DESIGN AWARD is the only and largest spatial award in Japan, which was established with the aim of expanding new possibilities in spatial design by discovering outstanding designs and talented designers and promoting them to the world.
This award is a great encouragement to all involved in creating the space, including our designers. We would also like to thank our clients for giving us this opportunity, and everyone who helped us along the way.
Going forward, we will continue to keep in mind the perspective of those who will use the space and work to create rich spaces that can contribute to our customers' businesses.

[Design intent]
The former East Wing of the Kobe Hankyu Building, which served as a symbol of Kobe and Sannomiya and a place of refuge for the local people, has been partially recreated in the lower floors, and the upper floors, West Wing and under the elevated railway have been reborn as a new gateway and symbol for Kobe. The arches that were the symbol of the building have also been incorporated into the interior space of the concourse, and in a station space where safety and security come first, an unprecedented personality, emotion and Hankyu-like gaiety have been expressed, reviving memories of the town and its former bustle.

Our involvement in this project dates back to 2017. Since then, we have been visiting the sites in Sannomiya and Umeda almost every week, and have held various discussions as a team with the business owner, the design JV, and many other people. There are many structural and operational constraints to carry out construction while the station is in operation, and it was a long process before we decided on the current design. I am very happy to have been able to participate as a part of this project together with the director, planners, and sales team. Although the station opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, I am very proud to see so many people using it as the hub of activity in the town. For me personally, this is a touching project that has helped us become firmly established in the Kansai area, a place I had little connection with until then. Thank you very much to everyone involved. (Design: Hayashino Yuki)
