[Design Intention]
The images of evacuees facing difficulties and the diverse characteristics of people are expressed through a common system that runs throughout the entire building: backdrop panels. In the evacuation experience on the first floor, backdrops that highlight the words of disaster victims present the challenges that can be expected in the event of a disaster. This fosters a "spirit of preparation" and leads to preparation learning. In the preparation learning on the second floor, backdrops are pictograms of 72 different characteristics sought after by victims of past disasters such as the Great East Japan Earthquake, providing preparation information that is tailored to each individual's characteristics. Backdrops that represent a variety of people encourage participants to actively move around, with the aim of making disaster preparation their own responsibility.

We are extremely honored to receive the prestigious Japan Sign Design Award. We would like to express our gratitude once again to all the people involved who provided such great cooperation in building the facility. The purpose of the Sona Area Tokyo Renewal Project is to encourage people to think about and make personal preparations for an earthquake directly beneath the capital, which is an urgent issue. We hope that this award will encourage more people to visit the facility, practice "preparation" in line with their own lifestyles, and further increase their understanding of the increasingly diverse people around them. "Fujinokuni Earth Environmental History Museum: The History of the Earth"

[Design Intention]
Using a technique called masking, we designed an exhibition that conveys 12.6 billion years of Earth's history, from when the Earth was born 4.6 billion years ago to when it may disappear 8 billion years from now, through rocks collected from around the world. The exhibition room, a former classroom of a closed prefectural high school, is covered entirely with perforated carpeting, and by cutting out sections to expose the floor, a world map emerges, creating a space for displaying the rocks. Meanwhile, by displaying and concealing text information on the walls, we aimed to provide an explanation of the exhibition that will pique the interest of visitors. This exhibition is characterized as a visual space through the two expressions of "spatial masking" and "information masking," and by effectively using perforated carpeting, we are also challenging ourselves to achieve both cost reduction and design.

It's been almost 10 years since the museum opened. As we approach this milestone, we are grateful that our new challenge with the curators has been highly praised, and we feel very happy that we have contributed to building expectations for the Fujinokuni Museum of Global Environmental History in the future. We hope that this will be an opportunity to attract more new fans to the museum. (Photo and commentary by Ishikawa Takahiro)
