About the Project

Overview The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Sports Pavilion was exhibited at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. In response to the Expo's theme of "Designing a Future Society Where Life Shines," the facility's concept was "It is people who save people." In order to generate empathy for the Red Cross's humanitarian activities and expand the circle of support, the design and content were developed to encourage people to think about "people" and "life" through experiences. In order to encourage people to see humanitarianism as something that concerns them personally, the pavilion space was divided into three zones themed on "Awareness," "Consideration," and "Act," and the space was created with an emphasis on experience.
Issues/Themes When we exhibited at the 2005 World Expo in Aichi, Japan, we poignantly conveyed the humanitarian crises occurring around the world and the people who are confronting them, and while it garnered sympathy from many people, it also evoked the hesitation that all humans have: "I want to do something, but I don't know what I can do." At this year's Osaka-Kansai Expo, our theme was to shake off that hesitation and foster "altruism" and the courage to take a step forward.
Space Solution/Realization Witnessing the ongoing global situation of war and the unforeseen threats that could strike Japan at any time, we aimed to create a story that would lead visitors to take the first step in action, realizing that they too could be on the side that needs help. We also developed a visual design in which a single red "Kotosen" line representing a person's journey draws a rich trajectory in the space in accordance with people's emotions, and when one "Kotosen" intersects with another, it becomes a powerful force, expressing a scene in which emotions well up. We designed an experience that carefully considers the feelings of visitors.
Sustainable design 3R design: The shop fixtures are made from recycled clothing materials, and the pavilion's original goods are also made from eco-friendly materials. All equipment used is also leased and reusable.
Universal design: We have implemented initiatives to enable anyone to enjoy Video content by providing universal services such as audio guides and subtitles.
