The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, for which we helped create the space, won the Gold Award for Museums and Cultural Spaces and the highest award, the KUKAN OF THE YEAR/Nikkei Inc. KUKAN DESIGN AWARD 2019 (sponsored by the Japan Space Design Association and the Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association). In addition, the following projects were selected as BEST100 or were selected.

KUKAN DESIGN AWARD is the only and largest spatial award in Japan, which was established with the aim of expanding new possibilities in spatial design by discovering outstanding designs and talented designers and promoting them to the world.

This award is a great encouragement to all involved in creating the space, including our designers. We would also like to thank the client who gave us this opportunity, and everyone who helped us along the way.

Going forward, we will continue to keep in mind the perspective of those who will use the space and work to create rich spaces that can contribute to our customers' businesses.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum Main Building

[Design intent]
The main building was completely renovated and refurbished, with a focus on atomic bombing materials in order to convey the reality of the bombing to future generations. The aim was to evoke memories of the immeasurable devastation through the "perspective of the atomic bombing survivors."
To achieve this, the space is divided into two areas: one where the indiscriminate damage on August 6th ("group") is exhibited as a horrific scene, allowing visitors to relive the path the victims of the bombing took, and the other where the lamentations of each individual victim ("individual") are exhibited, allowing visitors to confront the despair and suffering of each individual.
We hope that this series of landscapes will become a space where the cries of the souls of atomic bomb survivors from all walks of life can resonate in the hearts of people all over the world.

I am deeply moved that my involvement as a designer in this immeasurable event that occurred in Japan has led to such an honorable outcome. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone involved. With 2020 fast approaching, in an era of rapid technological innovation, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum has questioned the position and vector that design can achieve, and I am truly grateful that we have been able to devote ourselves to a design that carefully pushes forward the unshakable things that are important to us as human beings. I hope that many people will visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. (Design Direction: Tanaka Toshitake)

"Conveying the sorrow and suffering of each and every atomic bomb survivor to the next generation." In the four years since I joined the company, I have faced this challenge, working hand in hand with everyone at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and other related parties. I will never forget the emotion I felt when I witnessed so many visitors being moved by the exhibits after the museum opened. In these uncertain times, I have once again realized the great thing that spatial design can do for society. (Design: Utsumi Satomi)
