About the Project

Overview Tomobe Service Area is located in the Ibaraki area of the Joban Expressway. Under the theme of "Another joy in car travel," Environmental Design incorporates the characteristics of the region, Spatial Production a drama for the journey with "scene-making with the memory of the land as a backdrop." It is a next-generation driver's support space that brings comfort and vitality to people as a "place to discover and encounter" the charms of the region and a "place of rest" where people can relax and be healed.
Issues/Themes NEXCO East Japan has set out a concept called "dramatic area" as one of its aims to revamp the image of service areas and parking areas. Based on this concept, the aim is to create a facility that will Spatial Production a "dramatic journey" for users, with a facility image and product lineup that makes use of the characteristics of the region.
Space Solution/Realization Taking into consideration the regional characteristics of Mito, the exterior is a modern arrangement of a "samurai residence" style, while the interior is based on a design based on the theme of a "storehouse," Spatial Production a bustling market where local produce is gathered. Furthermore, a courtyard that takes in natural light is located in the center of the building, creating a relaxing space. In terms of merchandising, a wide range of seafood and mountain produce, which are Ibaraki Prefecture specialties, is available, making this a service area that makes use of the characteristics of the region and adds color to the user's journey.
