About the Project

Overview The Tokyo branch of Shunpanro, which has its main store in Shimonoseki and serves dishes using fresh ingredients from Yamaguchi Prefecture, including fugu cuisine, was opened in Hirakawacho, on the former site of the mansion of Sugi Magoshichiro, a politician from Yamaguchi Prefecture who was active during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
Based on the Japanese-Western atmosphere of the Shunpanro main store, which is famous as the site of the Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty, the restaurant offers table seating, Japanese-Western private rooms, and VIP rooms, and can be used for a variety of occasions, from small groups to large groups, such as entertaining, dining, and celebrations.
Issues/Themes Our goal was to create a Tokyo store that would allow visitors to experience the history and culture of Shunpanro, and would evoke the Shimonoseki main store, while still being unlike any other.
Space Solution/Realization In order to create an atmosphere reminiscent of the main store's Japanese-Western blend, attention was paid to the details of the carpets, lighting, furniture, and other furnishings. In addition, wave motifs were used to evoke the Kanmon Straits, which can be seen from the main store, and plates that have actually been used to decorate many banquets at the main store were displayed throughout the store. While still retaining the atmosphere of the main store, the Tokyo store has created a unique space unlike any other store.
