Using Spatial Production techniques, the remains of the earthquake disaster have been preserved to the greatest extent possible, in their original state at the time of the disaster

  • Cultural Spaces
  • As the first earthquake relic designated by the Reconstruction Agency, the aim is to preserve the structure as it was at the time of the disaster and make use of it for the future.

About the Project

Overview The former "Taro Tourism Hotel," which was damaged by the tsunami during the Great East Japan Earthquake, has been restored as a relic from the disaster and is now open to the public. The six-story hotel was flooded up to the fourth floor, and the exposed steel frame conveys the threat of tsunamis. On the sixth floor, there is a space where you can watch Video of the tsunami attack, taken from the same spot on the day, and you can tour the building by joining the Miyako Tourism and Cultural Exchange Association's "Learn Disaster Prevention" tour.
Issues/Themes The aim is to preserve as much of the damaged buildings as they were at the time of the disaster and make use of them so that they can serve as "symbols" to pass on the memories of the damage and recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, and as "shared assets of the citizens" to help with disaster prevention and mitigation.
Space Solution/Realization With the priorities of conveying the remains to the future and ensuring safety when they are used, all of the main structural components have been restored to a safe state and in compliance with relevant laws. At the same time, to ensure that the appearance of the damage caused by the disaster is not lost, painting techniques that allow the steel frame to be preserved in its current state were used, and techniques for exhibition Spatial Production were applied, such as applying a resin coating and aging processing to the damaged wall panels. These methods made it possible to develop a disaster relic that allows visitors to experience the power of the tsunami and the scale of the damage.
