About the Project

Overview As part of the 150th anniversary of Aoyama Gakuin's founding, this museum was built inside the historical Mashima Memorial Hall (a nationally registered tangible cultural property). The museum collects and exhibits materials related to the history of Aoyama Gakuin, historical materials related to Christianity in early modern and modern Japan, materials related to Christianity in the Meiji period, and materials related to Methodist schools and education, and serves to enhance the value of Aoyama Gakuin and support the activities of current students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Issues/Themes In converting a historic building originally constructed as a library and its extensions into an exhibition space, the small rooms that were separated due to structural constraints were effectively utilized to create a space that would fulfill the facility's functions and role.
Space Solution/Realization The exhibition space was designed under the concept of "Silent light," so that the thoughts of people associated with Aoyama Gakuin would be woven through light, gently enveloping and quietly guiding visitors. The history of Aoyama Gakuin, colored by the thoughts, words, and actions of those associated with the school, is expressed as a lineage of light, and spatial Spatial Production tailored to the theme of each room has created a tranquil viewing environment and an experiential exhibition space that makes the most of the characteristics of each room.
Design for Environment Universal design: We have created a space that takes into consideration a diverse range of visitors, such as ensuring wheelchair access within the exhibition space and setting exhibit heights that are child-friendly.
Cultural property Preservation Planning: We discussed and promoted the exhibition environment in the historical building, including the construction of a new vestibule and other improvements to the hardware and operational aspects.
