ONE PIECE Exhibition

An exhibition where the hugely popular manga jumps into 3D space

  • Event Spaces

The "ONE PIECE Exhibition" is the first exhibition of the hugely popular manga "ONE PIECE" since its serialization began in "Weekly Shonen Jump" in 1997. Tanseisha provided comprehensive support for the creation of the space, from exhibition planning to Design, Layout, Production, Construction. How was the two-dimensional world of "manga" expressed and created in a three-dimensional "space"? We will introduce a project that took full advantage of the power of the medium of "space."

  • We would like to introduce the project that planned, designed, and produced the first-ever exhibition of the manga "ONE PIECE."

We propose an interactive exhibition based on the original artwork.

Shueisha and Asahi Shimbun, the organizers, were planning an exhibition of original drawings depicting many memorable scenes from the manga series "ONE PIECE" to commemorate its 15th anniversary. We proposed an immersive exhibition that would include not only the original drawings, but also a powerful special movie viewable only at the venue, interactive art, sculptures, and other various interactive elements. This proposal was well-received, and the project began.

Through repeated meetings with our clients, we first identified the keyword "SHARE" as a guiding principle for proceeding with the exhibition. This word aligns with the worldview of "ONE PIECE," which depicts numerous adventures and passionate friendships. Since the exhibition is a place where many fans can gather in the same space and "SHARE" the experience, we decided to use this as the foundation for planning the exhibition.

Thoroughly crafting the exhibition's story.

In creating this exhibition space, our focus was on how to effectively translate the two-dimensional world of original drawings and manga into a three-dimensional exhibition space, based on the given condition of "original artwork exhibition" provided by the organizers.

The first thing we did was to thoroughly consider the exhibition's story, specifically "what kind of emotional flow visitors should experience from the entrance to the exit." We followed the manga convention of "capturing the heart in the first three pages" and placed an impactful exhibit at the beginning of the exhibition. We also drew parallels to the story of "ONE PIECE," which follows an adventure from island to island, creating a flow where visitors can experience each exhibit like an attraction. Then, with a special movie at its core, we arranged immersive exhibits that could only be realized in a real space, such as three-dimensional graphics, sculptures, and interactive art.

Leveraging cross-disciplinary expertise in space creation

Furthermore, given the expected large number of visitors for the "ONE PIECE Exhibition," it was necessary to balance creating an attractive space with smooth operation. We proceeded with creating the exhibition space while paying close attention to hospitality so that each and every visitor could properly enjoy the exhibits, and coordinating with the operational staff as needed.

This exhibition incorporates highly interactive, immersive elements, making it unlike any other exhibition held in a museum or gallery. In this respect, it is an example of how Tanseisha has made the most of the spatial design expertise it has cultivated through projects such as theme parks and expositions, applying it to a different field, that of exhibitions. Furthermore, as a project that develops two-dimensional manga content into a three-dimensional space, it serves as a good example of supporting a client's content business from the perspective of spatial design.
