About the Project

Overview To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure," which has countless fans around the world, an exhibition of original artwork by Hirohiko Araki was held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. He is the second manga artist to have a solo exhibition at a national art museum, after Osamu Tezuka. Aiming to give viewers a sense of the "new possibilities and future potential" of the work, the spectacular world of the work was expressed in the largest space ever.
Issues/Themes In addition to making the most of the charm of the original monochrome and color illustrations, we aim to allow visitors to enjoy the artistic worldview that continues to spread like ripples beyond the framework of manga, by interweaving a variety of media expressions throughout the entire space.
Space Solution/Realization The exhibition was unconstrained by the traditional chronological display format, and focused on the unique characters, innovative use of colors, and stories that characterize the works. It also featured collaborative works with unique contemporary artists such as sculptors, fashion designers, and Video artists, as well as 12 new large-scale original drawings (1.2m wide, 2m high), Araki's first production, and dynamically utilized the large space of the largest exhibition Spatial Production in Japan (2,000m2 in area, 8m high ceiling). Despite being held for only a month, the exhibition attracted over 140,000 visitors.
Design for Environment Graphics and other elements are available in four languages, and we have implemented universal design.
