| Overview | Since its opening in 1989, Marine World Uminonakamichi has been a beloved aquarium for the people of Fukuoka Prefecture. Through exhibits and shows themed around "the seas of Kyushu," it is an aquarium where visitors can feel the life of the sea and the pulse of the earth firsthand, and learn while having fun. "The Forest of Life" is a new corner located on the second floor, adjacent to the "Sea" exhibition zone, that focuses on the "forest," which is indispensable when discussing the biodiversity of the Amami Islands. It recreates "Amami, an island overflowing with diversity," where various creatures thrive. In addition, we also renovated the "Marine Hall," which is used for a variety of purposes, including lectures and events. |
|---|---|
| Issues/Themes | To express the rich natural environment of the Amami Islands and construct a unique worldview within the limited space of existing facilities. Furthermore, the aim is to allow visitors to intuitively experience that worldview and to showcase the vibrant lives of the plants and animals that inhabit it. |
| Space Solution/Realization | To express the magnificent nature of Amami within a limited space, we removed part of the ceiling and installed a dynamic 4.3-meter-high green wall. Furthermore, through exhibition methods such as FRP molding, actual exhibits, and wall graphics, we designed a space where visitors can intuitively experience the unique worldview of the plants and animals that inhabit it. Spatial Production lighting, sound, and irrigation systems, we recreated a variety of scenes, including sunny days, rainy days, and nighttime (moonlight). |
| Sustainable design | Consideration for the local environment: This exhibition also serves an educational role in fostering environmental awareness for the future by teaching visitors about the preciousness of the natural environment through Amami Oshima, a World Natural Heritage site. |
