About the Project

Overview Since its opening in 1990, the Fukuoka City Museum has played a central role in promoting the city's culture as a facility that exhibits and introduces the history of the distinctive region that has been created through the exchange of people, goods, and culture with Asia, and the lives of the people who live there. In November 2013, the museum underwent a complete renovation of the permanent exhibition and was reborn as an even more user-friendly facility.
Issues/Themes We aim to create a universal museum with exhibits that are easy for everyone to use and understand, befitting the city of Fukuoka's urban development goal of "A universal city, Fukuoka, where everyone is kind and friendly to everyone."
Space Solution/Realization In addition to renovating the permanent exhibition room, we were involved in a wide range of projects, including renovating the experiential learning room with hands-on exhibits and renovating and designing the ancillary facilities within the museum. The renovation policy was considered in a workshop format using inclusive design methods, and was concretely formulated by incorporating the opinions of a wide range of museum users, including parents and children, people with disabilities, and foreigners. In response to opinions that the exhibition route was difficult to understand and that it was difficult to find the display locations of the main exhibits, we improved the route to a straight line that allows visitors to view the exhibits without getting lost, and reorganized the exhibition structure to create a more striking display centered around the national treasure "Golden Seal," a local treasure, and the representative festival "Yamakasa."
