About the Project

Overview The "Yokkaichi Pollution and Environmental Future Museum" was newly established as a base for conveying the history and lessons of Yokkaichi pollution to the next generation, and for disseminating information both domestically and internationally on environmental improvement efforts, efforts to develop a town that balances industrial development with environmental conservation, and the knowledge and technology gained from these experiences. Meanwhile, the "Yokkaichi City Museum" in the same building has been reborn as a hands-on exhibit called "Time and Space Highway," where full-scale reproductions of Yayoi period pit dwellings, Muromachi period Yokkaichi Market, and Edo period Yokkaichi Inn are displayed.
Issues/Themes Yokkaichi has developed as a key transportation hub since ancient times, and in modern times has experienced the Yokkaichi Pollution amidst remarkable industrial development. This project aims to create a space where people can look back on the changes in the city and the way people live, and think about future urban development.
Space Solution/Realization At the "Yokkaichi Pollution and Environmental Future Museum," the space is expressed in a variety of participatory and experiential ways, such as a mapping Video onto a model of the city that shows the changes in urban development, and a large multi-screen display that displays messages about future urban development. In addition, by creating an atmosphere that matches the theme of each corner, we have created a space where visitors can receive and send information while deepening their interest. At the "Yokkaichi City Museum," in addition to academic value, we also place importance on Spatial Production that is rich in seasonal feeling and emotion when recreating the townscape. We have created a space where you can feel the development of the city of Yokkaichi and the changes in the lives of the people who live there.
