About the Project

Overview From the Meiji to early Showa periods, when Japan and Europe were connected by railroad, Tsuruga was a vibrant, international city that served as the gateway to these countries. Two red brick warehouses (built in 1905 and nationally registered tangible cultural properties) remain, symbolizing that time, and one has been renovated into a diorama museum and the other into a restaurant. In the diorama museum, the scenery of the railroad, port, and town from the past has been recreated with a nostalgic worldview.
Issues/Themes To create a facility that can attract many visitors and is expected to have a ripple effect on the entire region as a Tourism facility, and also to create a facility where residents can rediscover the culture and history of the region and think about the future possibilities of the town.
Space Solution/Realization Based on the concept of a "nostalgia diorama," a complex Spatial Production using Video, lighting, and sound recreates a good old streetscape that will inspire affection for Tsuruga. In addition, by placing historical heritage sites still scattered around the city within the diorama, it also has the effect of drawing visitors to the surrounding Tourism facilities. It has attracted attention as one of the largest railway dioramas in Japan, setting it apart from the rest, and has attracted many more visitors than expected.
