Gifu Kakamigahara Aerospace Museum

A specialized museum with an aviation and space theme that contributes to fostering children's dreams and promoting industry

  • Cultural Spaces
  • Aircraft exhibit in the aviation area. 21 unique aircraft that have been first flown, test flown, experimentally flown, or manufactured in Kakamigahara are neatly laid out in chronological order, allowing visitors to get a bird's-eye view of Japan's aviation industry.

About the Project

Overview The Kakamigahara Aerospace Science Museum, which opened in 1996 in Kakamigahara, a city that has developed as a base for the aerospace industry, underwent a full renovation in March 2018. The first floor has a theme of "aviation," while the second floor has a theme of "space," and exhibits include many one-of-a-kind aircraft with ties to Kakamigahara and the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" for the ISS, which was built with help from local companies. With a focus on inspiring the dreams of children who will lead the future, the museum aims to be a facility that can be enjoyed by a wide range of aviation and space fans from all over the country, local citizens, people involved in the aerospace industry, and fans of industrial Tourism.
Issues/Themes The museum will update its exhibition facilities, which have been in operation for about 20 years, to address the lack of space to display aircraft bodies, and at the same time, to contribute to the development of the industry and foster the dreams of the next generation by enhancing space-related exhibits, as one of the main industries in the region.
Space Solution/Realization In the aviation area, we proposed expanding the exhibition space to create a layout that would better highlight each and every aircraft. By focusing on the development of engineers and local industries, we planned and designed the exhibits to better convey their appeal and power. The space area is divided into five zones, and each zone uses easy-to-understand Video to present the history and future of technological challenges, as well as a wide range of information, from the latest research into the origins of life in space.
Design for Environment [Information Assurance] We have independently developed apps for the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, and foreigners, and they are compatible with both Video and explanatory graphics. We provide text that can be read aloud for the visually impaired, Japanese subtitles for Video for the hearing impaired, and multilingual subtitles and multilingual explanatory text for Video.
[Exhibition Guarantee] For the visually impaired, we have provided graphics that allow the silhouette of the exhibit aircraft to be tactile. We have created tactile diagrams that allow even blind children to touch and understand the exterior, engine, and cockpit.
