A completely unmanned, light-user-friendly new touch point for books
Photo: PIPS inc.
Overview | This project involved the launch of the first unmanned bookstore in a station. In response to the current situation where the number of bookstores in town is decreasing year by year, the brand "Hontas" aims to continue bookstores by converting them into unmanned bookstores and continue to provide consumers with unexpected encounters with books and the joy of books. We proposed and embodied the brand design, Experience Design, and spatial design. The first store was opened at Tokyo Metro's "Tameike-Sanno Station" (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), which is located in a business district and on the commuter route to the city center. We plan to continue opening smaller stores in the future. |

Issues/Themes | By considering what the brand value is, what kind of experience should be provided, and in what kind of space, and incorporating this into the spatial experience, we aim to attract casual users to the store and make it an easy place to visit. |
Space Solution/Realization | Focusing on the inherent value of a local bookstore, we designed an experience that encourages casual visits with the key phrase "Drop in, grab a quick bite, and get what's in season." While appealing to customers with an easy-to-understand entrance via the website and storefront signage, we also focused on using "slightly" distinctive materials and colors, and added hand-finished touches here and there to create a warm feeling throughout the store, so that it doesn't feel dull even when unmanned. Furthermore, we expressed the idea of "localization," and the unique personality of the Hontas brand is that it is able to get close to the people who visit the store through its book selection and design. |
Design for Environment | Energy-saving design: LED lighting is used, recycled vinyl materials are used for flooring, and existing equipment and sashes are reused to reduce waste. Safety design: We have installed anti-tipping devices for furniture and posted evacuation route maps to ensure the safety of our users. |
