About the Project

Overview First established in 1977 in Kyoto, the “thousand-year capital,” as a place to display traditional craftsmanship born out of the city’s long history, this facility, which has received acclaim both domestically and abroad, needed a total makeover. When it came to displaying these meticulously handcrafted, captivating pieces of art, we took a modern approach that made sure to showcase the techniques of the craftsmen and the production process itself. We reengineered the museum into a new industrial creative/promotion facility that matches craftsmen and enterprises and can propose ideas for new products or implementations of materials that suit modern lifestyles.
Issues/Themes The theme was to help increase visitors and give a deeper understanding of Kyoto’s traditional crafts and designs while at the same time modernizing the entire facility and instilling the ability of responding flexibly to changes in the modern lifestyle.
Space Solution/Realization We changed the main structure from a simple exhibition display to an environment featuring activities that promote the social implementing of new crafts and designs. While clearly reestablishing the layout into an almost editorial style display, featuring units appealing to the production process of the diverse products, we applied our technical and design knowhow to create a space that could flexibly operate a wide variety of events and uses featuring a set of highly stylish fixtures, furniture and lighting.
