About the Project

Overview The Manga Museum, which was located in a corner of the complex, has been expanded and renovated to cover the entire building. It has been transformed into a full-fledged manga museum, housing over 200,000 original manga drawings (original manuscripts) and including a storehouse to prevent deterioration and loss. This facility allows visitors to enjoy the medium of manga as they move between the world of manga and the real world.
Issues/Themes Our goal is to create a facility that will promote the appeal of manga both domestically and internationally by improving the storage environment and supporting the archiving of original drawings, in order to preserve these precious, one-of-a-kind original drawings for future generations.
Space Solution/Realization The Manga Storehouse Exhibition Room has been established as a modern storehouse in Masuda, Yokote City, a town with storehouses, to store, manage and display manga originals. The storage environment is kept constant 24 hours a day to prevent deterioration of the originals, and the activity of "preserving" and "utilizing" the originals as an "attractive storehouse" is itself made visible as part of the exhibits, allowing visitors to feel the importance of the originals in the storehouse and their value as a cultural resource of manga.
In addition, while being particular about being an "art museum," and being conscious of creating a space with a solemn atmosphere, the museum also combines real "objects" in the real world with the various mechanisms and rules that make up manga, and sprinkles elements of manga throughout the museum, creating mechanisms that allow visitors of all ages to enjoy the world of manga.
Design for Environment Cultural property Preservation Planning: We have taken care to reduce the deterioration of the original manga drawings by maintaining a constant temperature and humidity air environment, and by using interior materials and neutral paper that emit less harmful substances.
