About the Project

Overview Hachioji was known as the "Soto" because of its thriving silkworm farming and weaving industries. This facility was developed as an information hub where visitors can encounter the history and culture of Hachioji, a "Soto" registered as a Japan Heritage site. In order to convey the charm of Hachioji, the concept was "connecting people, history, and hometown," and the facility's logo, display fixtures, and merchandise were all designed with a motif of connected circles (the "eight" in Hachi). Circular windows are opened here and there in the exhibition space, and places that connect with the charm of Hachioji are scattered throughout.
Issues/Themes One of the given conditions of this project was to temporarily relocate and refurbish the existing exhibition functions within a commercial facility in front of the station until Hachioji City Local History Museum relocated, creating a space that would be accessible to a wider target audience and allow people to learn about Hachioji through the exhibitions.
Space Solution/Realization On the façade, Video is superimposed on a large single picture, and projection mapping Spatial Production is incorporated to make it an eye-catcher for commercial facility users. The exhibition room is composed as a graphical space expressed in hand-drawn dynamic illustrations and single phrases. Spatial Production of an experience space where visitors could encounter the charm of Hachioji as if they were going through a story. And the space behind the illustration displays the exhibition materials and explanations in a completely different museum taste from the front side. The dual design creates a contrasting space that leads from interest to learning.
