About the Project

Overview Hachioji was known as the "Mulberry City" because of its thriving silkworm farming and weaving industries. This facility was developed as an information hub where visitors can encounter the history and culture of Hachioji, a "Mulberry City" registered as a Japan Heritage site. In order to convey the charm of Hachioji, the concept was "connecting people, history, and hometown," and the facility's logo, display fixtures, and merchandise were all designed with a motif of eight connected circles (the "eight" in Hachioji). Circular windows are opened here and there in the exhibition space, and places that connect with the charm of Hachioji are scattered throughout.
Issues/Themes One of the given conditions of this project was to temporarily relocate and refurbish the existing exhibition functions within a commercial facility in front of the station until Hachioji City Local History Museum relocated, creating a space that would be accessible to a wider target audience and allow people to learn about Hachioji through the exhibitions.
Space Solution/Realization The façade features a large Video overlaid with video and projection Spatial Production to catch the eye of commercial facility users. The exhibition room is a graphical space expressed with dynamic hand-drawn illustrations and one-sentence phrases. It is an experiential space where visitors can encounter the charms of Hachioji as if they were walking through a story. The space behind the illustration Spatial Production exhibit materials and explanations in a completely different museum style from the front. The dual-sided design creates a contrasting space that leads from interest to learning.
