About the Project

Overview Red Bull Kumite is an invitation-only international e-sports tournament that has been held annually in France since 2015, as Japanese games have made their way overseas. This event re-imported it to Japan. 15 invited players from around the world and one player who passed the qualifying tournament participated in the main event. 248 players from around the world participated in the qualifying tournament. It was streamed worldwide in both Japanese and English, with over 50,000 simultaneous viewers on the day and over 400,000 cumulative views (as of December 2020). It attracted attention from all over the world.
Issues/Themes As this is an event that attracts global attention, the goal is to build a bridge between France and the world, and Japan, through esports.
Space Solution/Realization The whole event expressed the "Japaneseness" that is popular overseas, with Spatial Production use of helmets, family crests, and banner designs. Family crests were designed and distributed to each player, portraying them as military commanders. The winner of the match received an original helmet trophy with their own family crest inlaid in addition to their opponent's. The moment the winning player received the helmet trophy, confetti engulfed the entire venue, and the excitement reached a climax. By sharing and exchanging cultures through this reverse import event, this venue became a bridge between the world and Japan's e-sports culture.
Design for Environment Recycled materials: Wire mesh used at the event was used as signboards for athletes to give to viewers. Building materials that would normally be discarded were also put to good use as attractive gifts to further enhance the memories of the event.
Reuse design: The building materials used in the venue are system materials, minimizing waste.
