Overview | It opened in July 2020 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Machiko Hasegawa's birth. It is an annex to the existing art museum and is made up of a zone showcasing Machiko Hasegawa's works, a zone showcasing her life, a special exhibition zone, and a storage facility. The building and exhibition were considered as one, and after repeated discussions with the relevant parties, it was designed around the theme of the Showa era, the era in which Machiko lived. In addition, Machiko's works are treated as works of art, and efforts are being made to balance preservation and exhibition. |

Issues/Themes | Although he is a nationally famous manga artist, he is surprisingly little known, and the facility aims to convey the breadth of his works other than Sazae-san, his worldview, and his personality. To create a storage environment that can preserve the numerous original drawings and valuable materials in an appropriate condition even in emergencies such as natural disasters. |
Space Solution/Realization | After much discussion with the Architectural Design team and curators, we designed the museum with the "essence of Hasegawa Machiko" in mind. The exhibition content and spatial design reflect the somewhat modest personality of Machiko, who rarely made public appearances during her lifetime and had little exposure in the mass media, as well as the atmosphere of her original work, which is completely different from the anime. |
Design for Environment | Safety design: In the area where visitors are immersed in the world of the artwork, we took safety into consideration down to the smallest details, such as rounding the corners of the fixtures, as we knew that many children would be experiencing it. Universal design: Considering that there are fans of a wide range of ages, from children to the elderly, the display cases were designed with an emphasis on visibility, with clever layout and lighting. Cultural property Preservation Planning: The storage facility and display cases for storing the artworks were designed and constructed to have museum-level functionality. To be able to respond to emergencies such as natural disasters, we used interior materials with high thermal insulation and temperature properties, and designed the storage facility to rely as little on air conditioning as possible. |
